Outreach and Education

The Department of Outreach and Education’s team of trained and supervised peer educators and outreach workers present HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Workshops for high-risk clients or clients of unknown HIV status, and Treatment Education for HIV-positive clients. Workshops occur on an as-needed basis, typically once a week, at sites in all boroughs of New York City.

HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Workshop topics include (but are not limited to):
  • HIV 101
  • Safer Sex Guidelines
  • Are You at Risk?
  • STIs and HIV
  • Healthy Relationships
  • HIV/AIDS in New York City, 2005
  • HIV and Stigma
  • HIV Testing and Counseling

HIV/AIDS Treatment Education Topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Overview of HIV Pathogenesis
  • Current Guidelines for Anti-Retroviral Use
  • Opportunistic Infections
  • Introduction to the Immune System
  • Managing Drug Side Effects
  • Substance Use and HIV
  • Doctor/Patient Relationships
  • The Life Cycle of HIV
  • Treatment Adherence Strategies

Workshops are presented at facilities such as community-based organizations, HIV housing residences, substance abuse facilities (detoxification units), hospitals and hospices, schools, and correctional facilities.

Body Positive’s Outreach Workers target high-risk communities in all boroughs of New York, providing safer sex kits, referrals and individual counseling. They also represent Body Positive at health fairs, street festivals and special events.
